23 Jan 2012 Schloss Auerbach in Erlebnisreich

TOWN OF AURBACH AND SCHLOSS

Our assignment is to take and set up a computer for the Freiburg FHC, which is in the South West corner of Germany. Today was extremely cold. They say worse than in past years. It is now in the 20's, way to cold for us. We really didn't want to get out of the car, but adventure was beckoning us. Anything in between our home and our destination is fair game for an excursion. We found along the freeway the Schloss Auerbach in the town of Erlebnisreich. We see so many interesting things just looking out over the freeways we may be traveling. Our appointment was for 12:00 noon so we had plenty of time.

This town was originally built by Charlemagne, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, but the castle was not built until 1247. The countryside is filled with vineyards, a beautiful site to see. The Schloss has a unique triangular keep and we enjoyed exploring every nook and cranny. In the year 1356, a powerful earthquake shook the Rhine rift and the wall in the castle came down but was rebuilt and in its heyday, it was considered to be one of the most secure castles.
