This was a wonderful day, not really planned, but great none the less. It started out with a girls day taking in the new all German clothing second had store near Freigericht. Sister Stevenson, another second hand mama and myself, missed it being open by three days. It changed times, so we were unable to make any purchases. We will go another time, but that didn't dampen our spirits. She had two places that she thought I would enjoy seeing. The first was Steinheim, a town Gene and I had been to before but at different ends of the town, so it was like a whole new adventure.

A little bit of History, you know me! The town lies amid rolling foothills and is a gorgeous city near the teutoburg forest. This is a wonderful and exciting place to explore if you are a geologist or just plain like to do some hiking like my daughter Kim does. She would appreciate the mountain ranges that have been determined to be from the Triassic, Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous periods. Some of the rocks are as old as the Palaeozoic era which are found deep underground, as well as gravel and sand from the Ice Age. All this makes for interesting subject matter. There has been evidence found that dates Steinheim into the Neolithic Age, about 6,000 years ago. It was inhabited during the Birth of Christ by the Germanic tribes. In 600, the Saxon tribes took over. Down through the ages it was threatened by plagues, fires and the 30 year war.

We did alot of walking around, which my feet and back hated, but the heart and mind thoroughly enjoyed this cute little town. The Catholic Church Mary had a really unique slate covered steeple. The Castle Hausen was built in 1609 by Wolf Von Haxthausen. It is in the Renaissance period style. Its South gable is decorated with a valuable scupture, a crowned Madonna with a child. Many famous poets stayed here at one time or another. All around is a 1718 Baroque landscaped garden. What amazed me is to find out there school system today has 1 teacher to each 17 pupils. How would that be California School District? We stumbled upon a museum which had artifacts from all periods in German history, so it was interesting.

On to another cute little town, Seligenstadt which means blessed ones. It is one of Germany's oldest towns and was of great importance during the Carolengian period. It is situated on the River Main, 25 Km South East of Frankfurt. Sometime in AD 100, during the reign of Roman Emperor Trajan, a Castrum was built where the Market Place is today. In 260, the Selingenst settlement was established. A Benedictine Monastery was also built. The grounds are laid out so well. All kinds of fruit trees are established throughout. I am sure it is beautiful in the spring time with all the roses and fruit trees in bloom. As you go through the town you you see lots of half timbered houses. The streets are very narrow and we ate at a really nice Italian restaurant. We each had something different but both were very good eating.

I can only speak for myself, but by the end of our girls day out, I was pooped. I think I have found a true Sister in the gospel. Sister Stevenson is a trooper. She is in worse shape with her back than I am, but she never lets on. She just keeps on going like the Energizer bunny. We laugh all the time, so she is a good friend to have. Hope they come to visit us this summer in Cali.
