EBRACH - KIRCHEWEIN ( Cherry wine festival)

The entire day was spent at the Family History Fair and we met so many interesting people. Most were non members, and it is wonderful to see how many genealogical organizations are out there to help people here in Germany. Elder Walters gave out a few more pass along cards and we were able to leave early because most of the people were listening to the lectures in German, so we had a little time off to visit another wonderful Palace in Ebrach. As you come around a corner you are able to see a huge complex with a tall cathedral at the end. We were told by Elder & Sister Hermann that this place was a must to see. We photographed the old Abbey that once held a large group of Monks. It was originally built in the 1100's and used as a monastery. Later it was refurbished into a palace. The tiered staircase is also decorated with statues and ceiling Frescoes. We were able to take pictures here.

Sister Walters heard concert music coming from one of the rooms, so we went inside to discover a professional symphonic orchestra performing. It was beautiful, peaceful and relaxing, but the room was already filled so we had to sit in the hallway which was not bad as it was made of beautiful pinkish marbel. It was a free concert and they have them every week in the summer time. I love that about Germany. They hold in high regard music of the Masters and they want their citizens to enjoy. For those of you who like 1700 classical music you would appreciate that we listened to the music of Teleman, Bach, Graupner and Handel. I was able to snap a few pictures of the event and the beautiful hall it was presented it.

We had enough time to walk next door to the Ebrach Abby which is one of the most breathtaking chapels in Europe. Wow, gold everywhere. In fact, an iron fence separated us from going inside. We took some pictures thru the bars until a wowrker asked if we would like to go inside. Of course, we accepted. To our amazement, it was even more astonishing up close. Powerful Prince Bishops once ruled here. They were the men who elected the Holy Roman Emperor. Most of the buildings here were over eight hundred years old or older. The high alter is designed in the Rocco style and was built in the 1300's. It is in tact today as it was then. Back to the hotel and on to another day of Family History making.

Sunday was our last day at the Conference and much information was gleaned by going to all the other booths and seeing what they had to offer. The conference was over by 3:00 PM and it was take down time. It took us only 1 hour to take down, what it took us 5 hours to put up. We said our good-byes and started for home. On our way back to the autobahn we drove by what we would call a French Chalet. It appeared to be empty but we could imagine what is looked like in its glory with a restful pond in the back yard and a huge veranda on the back of the building. Got a few shots of that place. I almost forgot to tell you about our little diversion after leaving Ebrach, we saw lots of people around a carnival ride. We walked into a huge tent and found most of the town folks there eating, drinking and singing. Yes, they had a large um-pah band and all had on Liederhosen and fun hats. We had run into their Kirchewein festival. It was fun to feel like we were really Germans living there. What am I saying, we are really German. What a wonderful weekend we had. I love this assignment and the intersting pllaces we get to see on the way.
