24-25 Aug 2011 Wurzburg & Rhein Trip

I was sick today, so Bro Walters took Diane and Steve to Wurzburg to see the palace and Marienburg Fortress. They said this palace blew them away. Much better than anything they had seen on their European trip however it did take a second to the Neuschwanstein Castle in Austria. They loved all the different rooms and the formal gardens.

SANKT GOAR AND TRIP DOWN THE RHEIN RIVER

RUDESHEIM

The Rhein trip was a must see. Everyone has to see all the different castles on the Rhein. They were not disappointed. It was a beautiful day with a little bit of an overcast. They loved the little town called Rudesheim where the tour begins. We walked down the main road in town which is for pedestrians only. It is just big enough to bring a small wagon through. It has quaint little businesses on each side. Ivy hanging from every roof top and cobblestone walk ways. You will have to see the photos to know what I am talking about. On to the boat for a beautiful trip down the Rhein. We found some shade but then decided to find some sun because that breeze off the water is pretty cold. We all enjoyed just sitting and taking in the beautiful scenery filled with rows and rows of grape vineyards interspersed with a castle here and there. The only thing we were missing was the music of Wagner. We did hear the song of the loralei . That is the rock where the so called beautiful girl sang the boat drivers to their deaths by driving into the rock when she sang. There are some dangerous shoals there. A big tanker actually turned over there about 3 months ago, so the folk lore has some merit. After the boat ride, which was great, they took a tour of the castle in Sankt Goar and then on to the town to see the clocks. This has the largest free standing coo coo clock in all the world. It actually keeps time and has a coo coo in it that goes off every hour. we found some good food and eis and took an early leisure drive home. Tomorrow we will take the Tragesers to the airport to catch a plane for home. We had a wonderful with our good friends who we hope to go on a cruise with, to Alaska, when we get home.

We took them to the airport on the 26th and they were on their way safely. We loved seeing them but it is 100% back to work for us for the next 6 months, until our departure date for home. That will be a joyous and sad day for us. We do love Germany and the many friends we have made here.
