06 Jun 2011 Bern & Basel

What can I say about the city of Bern that has not already been said about the other Swiss cities. It is beyond description. What was once a medieval city founded in 1191 is now the capital of Switzerland. It is famous for the Toblerone chocolate bar and Swiss cheese. It has one of the longest shopping promenades in Europe. The River that runs through it is called the Aare. The Munster Cathedral is the highest Gothic church in Europe. The views of the farms and the alps from here are amazing.

Our last stop in Switzerland is Basel. If you love museums you will love this city as there are 40 of them. It has a beautiful botanical garden, many parks and the banks of the Rhein are made for relaxing and that is what people in Switzerland do. The countryside is dotted with rows of cherry trees which are in full bloom with pink flowers in the spring. Basel is very close to Germany, France, the black forest and the Vosges Mts.

Every year a celebration called the fasnacht takes place. It commemorates Ash Wednesday. Everyone gets dressed up like they are going to a masked ball. Rather grotesque looking masques at that. It is a 24 hour celebration with parades, candle light processions and parties everywhere. As you will see on one of the photos it looks like a landslide along the mountain side. We were worried that we would not be getting home, but as you can see, we did get home. Delightful trip and we really hated to leave Switzerland
