18 Jun 2011 Ebrach Abbey, Bamberg & Altenhaus Castle

EBRACH ABBEY

Today I had to go it alone with the Anunsons because I believe we wore Sister Walters out. She stayed home to get some much needed rest for her back and feet. I was anxious for Johnny and Jenny to see a place that I enjoyed seeing for the first time. Ebrach Chapel was beautiful. It looked a lot like Wurzburg with gardens and everything but it was on a much smaller scale. It is presently being used as a psychiatric Ward for Youth offenders. It has been used for this purpose since the 1800's. At the time, they were having a lot of problems with their youth and so they founded a home for them at the chapel. I found out one important fact about chapels whether it be Catholic or Protestant. Most of them have box seats. Kind of like you are at an Opera. I thought they were for rich people who just wanted a good view, but that is only half right. It was for the rich people but because they did not want to get any diseases that the poor people had.

Thought you would also be interested to know that this Abbey is the final resting place for 30 Bishop's hearts. You might ask where is the rest of their bodies? Their entrails went to the Marienbrug chapel in Wurzburg and their bodies went to St. Kilian Cathedral. In my opinion, they are going to have a fun time on resurrection day.

BAMBERG

Altenhaus Castle is situated in Bamberg. The second place I took Johnny and Jenny today. The history of Bamberg is interesting. It is a city in Bavaria Germany. It was one of the cities that was not destroyed in WWII. The U.S. has 4,000 soldiers stationed here today. I think the most unique and famous place to see in Bamberg is the Rat House that stands in between two rivers, the Main and the Regnitz.

The town itself began in 902 AD. For a short time it was the center of the Holy Roman Empire. It has been called the "Franconian Rome", because like Rome, it is built on seven hills. The scenery here is spectacular and Johnny and Jenny walked around this unique city.
