May 8, 2010 Roman Fort in Saalburg

Today we had a wunderbar heute (Wonderful day) We went with the couples group to Saalburg, an old Roman Fort built about 80 AD. It's history is closely connected with that of the Limes (The line which formed the Northern boundary of the Roman Empire.) It was built during the course of War waged by the Roman Emperor Domitian against the Chatti, a Germanic tribe in the North Hessen in AD 83-85. 500 Roman soldiers occupied this fort. The Fort was abandoned in Ad 260 when the country up to the Rhine was occupied by Germanic tribes. In the middle ages it served the peasants of the neighborhood as a convenient quarry.

We took so many pictures and I am going to put them all on the blog. I hope all my children and grandchildren will enjoy it all. I know my boys will enjoy the armor and weaponry. I talked with another Sister who said she was collecting pictures of the old hardware found on the old buildings around the countryside. She has them framed and hung on her wall. I found that very interesting. I think I would like to do that. That's why I took so many hardware pictures, but I won't bore you with them all, just a few.

After wards we ate at the Landgasthof in Saalburg. Very good but very expensive. Remember we are on the Euro. It's going down so that's good for us. I had fish with the German white asparagus that is only in season 2 weeks. It tastes so good with white sauce on it. Gene didn't want to try that so he went with the good old stand by schnitzel. It can be in either beef or pork. He had veal. It was good. I took a picture of an old piano that was in the entry way. Thought you would enjoy seeing that Dawn.

(explanation for pictures: Roman Temple, Elder MacNamara and Gene, Iron door, Caesar statue, Roman weapons, Roman uniform, Grinding Mill, Shields and spears, Working and fighting tools, Roman shoes, oil urn, Insignia's (check out the swastica emblems), Bathhouse, roof tiles and the beautiful out grounds)

  1. Gene,
You need to try everything while in Germany. Just don't eat the safe, standby food. Get out there and try the white aparagus. Plus, try roladen and everything else. It looks like you are out walking enough, so that will help burn off all the calories from that rich, German food. Sounds like you guys are having fun.

  2. Gene is a scardy cat. He misses so many things but when we are with other people he will try new things. He actually tried some snetzel. He usually doesn't eat apples. We walk all the time, so no fear of him gaining weight. He has dropped the snickers for good old German chocolate. He eats one big package a day.
